What is Hypnosis?

Hypnotist Devin Hastings says it best - Hypnosis, in its simplest definition, is your ability to convince yourself something is true. You can allow yourself to go into hypnosis, be hypnotized, by somebody or something external, or by focusing internally on your own thoughts, feelings, or memories. The process of hypnosis bypasses the natural critical factor of your conscious mind, the "yeah, but" factor, and opens direct communication with your subconscious. Your subconscious directly controls your feelings, beliefs and behavior.

"There is no need to consider the subconscious a scary, super-powerful, Freudian font of destructive 'knowledge'. In reality, the subconscious is an emotionless database of stored programs whose function is strictly concerned with reading environmental signals and engaging in hard wired behavioral programs, no questions asked, no judgments made. The subconscious mind is a programmable hard drive into which our life experiences are downloaded. The programs are fundamentally hardwired stimulus-response behaviors. The fundamental behaviors, beliefs and attitudes we observe in our parents become 'hardwired' as synaptic pathways in our subconscious minds. Once programmed into the subconscious mind, they control our biology for the rest of our lives…unless we can figure out a way to reprogram them.” - Dr. Bruce Lipton, author, The Biology of Belief

Everything originates in your mind. How you feel, what you do and how you connect with others is determined by your thinking. When your unconscious mind fails to fully support your conscious desires, willpower alone does not seem to be enough to overcome unhealthy habits and behaviors. You need a way to program your unconscious to better serve you. That is what Hypnosis, Hypnotherapy and HypnoCoaching™ are all about. Bypassing the critical faculty and communicating with the subconscious mind can create rapid, permanent change.

Myths of Hypnosis

If you have never experienced hypnosis, you may have some questions or concerns.

There are many unwarranted scare stories that surround the use of hypnosis... the following list, thought not exhaustive, should help to dispel any groundless worries or fears that you might have.

You cannot ‘get stuck’ - this is actually quite impossible.

You cannot be made to do things you don’t want to.

You do not go to sleep - you are totally aware of yourself and your surroundings at all times.

You can leave the hypnotic state whenever you want to.

You cannot ‘lose your mind’ or be in any way ‘possessed’.

You will not suddenly blurt out all those dark secrets!

You are not in anybody’s power and nobody can take control of you in any way.

There is no such thing as a ‘hypnotised feeling’ so you won’t actually feel hypnotised at all. In fact, what is most likely is a feeling of calmness and relaxation, though not everybody experiences even that.
